“예수를 믿음으로 천국의 시민권자된 축복”

■ [사도행전(Acts) 22:12-29]
(행 22:12) 율법에 따라 경건한 사람으로 거기 사는 모든 유대인들에게 칭찬을 듣는 아나니아라 하는 이가
(행 22:13) 내게 와 곁에 서서 말하되 형제 사울아 다시 보라 하거늘 즉시 그를 쳐다보았노라
(행 22:14) 그가 또 이르되 우리 조상들의 하나님이 너를 택하여 너로 하여금 자기 뜻을 알게 하시며 그 의인을 보게 하시고 그 입에서 나오는 음성을 듣게 하셨으니
(행 22:15) 네가 그를 위하여 모든 사람 앞에서 네가 보고 들은 것에 증인이 되리라
(행 22:16) 이제는 왜 주저하느냐 일어나 주의 이름을 불러 침례를 받고 너의 죄를 씻으라 하더라
(행 22:17) 후에 내가 예루살렘으로 돌아와서 성전에서 기도할 때에 황홀한 중에
(행 22:18) 보매 주께서 내게 말씀하시되 속히 예루살렘에서 나가라 그들은 네가 내게 대하여 증언하는 말을 듣지 아니하리라 하시거늘
(행 22:19) 내가 말하기를 주님 내가 주를 믿는 사람들을 가두고 또 각 회당에서 때리고
(행 22:20) 또 주의 증인 스데반이 피를 흘릴 때에 내가 곁에 서서 찬성하고 그 죽이는 사람들의 옷을 지킨 줄 그들도 아나이다
(행 22:21) 나더러 또 이르시되 떠나가라 내가 너를 멀리 이방인에게로 보내리라 하셨느니라
(행 22:22) 이 말하는 것까지 그들이 듣다가 소리 질러 이르되 이러한 자는 세상에서 없애 버리자 살려 둘 자가 아니라 하여
(행 22:23) 떠들며 옷을 벗어 던지고 티끌을 공중에 날리니
(행 22:24) 천부장이 바울을 영내로 데려가라 명하고 그들이 무슨 일로 그에 대하여 떠드는지 알고자 하여 채찍질하며 심문하라 한대
(행 22:25) 가죽 줄로 바울을 매니 바울이 곁에 서 있는 백부장더러 이르되 너희가 로마 시민 된 자를 죄도 정하지 아니하고 채찍질할 수 있느냐 하니
(행 22:26) 백부장이 듣고 가서 천부장에게 전하여 이르되 어찌하려 하느냐 이는 로마 시민이라 하니
(행 22:27) 천부장이 와서 바울에게 말하되 네가 로마 시민이냐 내게 말하라 이르되 그러하다
(행 22:28) 천부장이 대답하되 나는 돈을 많이 들여 이 시민권을 얻었노라 바울이 이르되 나는 나면서부터라 하니
(행 22:29) 심문하려던 사람들이 곧 그에게서 물러가고 천부장도 그가 로마 시민인 줄 알고 또 그 결박한 것 때문에 두려워하니라

■ 바울을 죽이려 하는 유대인들 (22:22~23)
복음을 대적하는 사람에게는 어떤 진실한 간증도 통하지 않습니다. 바울이 이방인 선교가 하나님 뜻이요 자신의 사명임을 알리자, 유대인들은 바울을 죽이려 합니다. 옷을 벗어 던지고 티끌을 공중에 날리는 것은(23절) 분노가 극에 달했음을 보여 주는 행위입니다. 선민의식에 사로잡힌 유대인들은 배교자 바울이 하나님을 모독하고 유대인들을 모욕했다고 생각한 것입니다. 유대인들은 이전에 베드로의 복음 선포를 듣고도 사도들을 죽이려 했습니다
(5:29~33). 복음은 진리요 생명입니다. 누구든지 복음을 대적하면 영원한 죽음에 이를 수밖에 없습니다. 복음 전도자는 자기 생명을 걸고, 죽음으로 향하는 이들에게 생명의 길을 전하는 사람입니다.

■ 바울의 로마 시민권 (22:24~29)
성도는 하나님이 허락하신 신분과 권리 등 모든 것을 하나님 나라와 의를 위해 사용해야 합니다. 바울은 죽음의 위협을 받으며 채찍질을 당할 위기에서 자신이 로마 시민임을 밝힙니다. 이는 남은 사명을 온전히 감당하기 위한 지혜로운 처사였습니다. 당시에 로마 시민은 정식 재판 없이는 처벌되지 않았고, 심문 과정에서도 결박이나 채찍질을 당하지 않는 등 특별하게 보호받았습니다. 많은 돈을 들여서라도 얻고자 할 만큼(28절), 로마 시민권은 큰 특권이었습니다. 그런데 억만금을 주고도 살 수 없는 천국 시민권이 우리에게 선물로 값없이 주어졌습니다. 예수 그리스도를 통해, 로마 시민과 비교할 수 없는 특권과 권세를 소유하게 된 천국 시민은 바울처럼 세상의 어떤 권세 앞에서도 당당합니다.

■ 오늘의 기도
주님, 이 땅에 어떤 나라의 시민권과도 비교할 수 없는 하늘나라의 시민권자로 나를 불러 주시고 천국에 들어 갈 수 있는 은혜를 주셔서 감사합니다. 더욱 진리의 말씀을 사랑하고 주님을 사랑하여 내 주를 가까이하는 매일매일의 삶되기를 원합니다. 오늘도 순간순간 주님을 의지하며 걱정과 근심, 두려움들로부터 저의 마음과 생각을 지킬 수 있게 도와주옵소서. 아멘.

“The Roman Citizen”

■ [사도행전(Acts) 22:12-29]
12 “A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. 13 He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him. 14 “Then he said: ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteo us One and to hear words from his mouth. 15 You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’ 17 “When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.’ 19 “ ‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. 20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’ 21 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’ ” 22 The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him! He’s not fit to live!” 23 As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24 the commander ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and interrogated in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. 25 As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?” 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. “What are you going to do?” he asked. “This man is a Roman citizen.” 27 The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes, I am,” he answered. 28 Then the commander said, “I had to pay a lot of money for my citizenship.” “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied. 29 Those who were about to interrogate him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.

■ The Uncomfortable Truth (22:22-24)
The Jews are willing to listen to Paul until he says that God sent him to share the Gospel with the Gentiles because He knew the Jews would not accept his testimony. The angry crowd shouts that Paul is not fit to live, and Roman soldiers carry him away to find out what he has done to anger the crowd. Many people are willing to listen to the Gospel message only if the claims do not challenge their personal beliefs or convictions. People often have little trouble believing that Jesus was a good man or a powerful prophet, but they become offended when they are challenged with the exclusivity of Jesus Christ as the sole Savior of the world. The truth can be uncomfortable and even offensive, but those who receive the Gospel understand that God shines His light on sin so that they might repent and turn to Him.

■ The Perfect Background (22:25-29)
Moments before Paul is flogged, he reveals that he is a Roman citizen by birth. The commander is alarmed because it is illegal to subject Roman citizens to flogging without a trial and because he has put a Roman citizen in chains. We see God's sovereign wisdom in Paul's background: Paul is a Jew who is well-versed in Jewish law and tradition, and he is also a Roman citizen who is free to travel across the Roman Empire. God granted Paul the perfect background to fulfill his calling to spread the Gospel to both Jews and Gentiles. Likewise, God has created, equipped, and placed each one of us strategically so that we are able to fulfill our callings and play our part in building His kingdom.

Father God, thank you for creating me and equipping me so that I may serve You. Grant me the courage and wisdom I need to share the Gospel. May You be glorified in all that I do. In Jesus' name. Amen.
