“주님을 진정 두려워할 때 하나님의 말씀에 순종합니다”

■ [사도행전(Acts) 24:24-23]
(행 24:24) ○수일 후에 벨릭스가 그 아내 유대 여자 드루실라와 함께 와서 바울을 불러 그리스도 예수 믿는 도를 듣거늘
(행 24:25) 바울이 의와 절제와 장차 오는 심판을 강론하니 벨릭스가 두려워하여 대답하되 지금은 가라 내가 틈이 있으면 너를 부르리라 하고
(행 24:26) 동시에 또 바울에게서 돈을 받을까 바라는 고로 더 자주 불러 같이 이야기하더라
(행 24:27) 이태가 지난 후 보르기오 베스도가 벨릭스의 소임을 이어받으니 벨릭스가 유대인의 마음을 얻고자 하여 바울을 구류하여 두니라
(행 25:1) 베스도가 부임한 지 삼 일 후에 가이사랴에서 예루살렘으로 올라가니
(행 25:2) 대제사장들과 유대인 중 높은 사람들이 바울을 고소할새
(행 25:3) 베스도의 호의로 바울을 예루살렘으로 옮기기를 청하니 이는 길에 매복하였다가 그를 죽이고자 함이더라
(행 25:4) 베스도가 대답하여 바울이 가이사랴에 구류된 것과 자기도 멀지 않아 떠나갈 것을 말하고
(행 25:5) 또 이르되 너희 중 유력한 자들은 나와 함께 내려가서 그 사람에게 만일 옳지 아니한 일이 있거든 고발하라 하니라

■ 구원보다 돈을 바라는 총독 벨릭스 (24:24~27)
우리가 두 마음을 품지 않고 마음을 성결하게 하며 하나님을 가까이하면, 하나님도 우리를 가까이하십니다(약 4:8). 그러나 벨릭스는 두 마음을 품었습니다. 한편으로는 종교적인 관심을 갖고 예수 그리스도의 복음을 들으려는 마음이 있었습니다(24절). 그러나 '동시에' 바울에게서 뇌물을 받으려는 마음과(26절), 유대인들로부터 인기를 얻으려는 욕심도 있었습니다(27절). 벨리스는 의와 절제와 심판에 관한 말씀을 듣고 두려워하면서도, 자신의 탐욕과 불의를 곧 바로 회개하고 구원 얻는 길로 나아가지 않았습니다. 영원한 생명보다 현세의 부귀와 권력을 더 가치 있게 여긴 것입니다. 진리를 듣고 따르기로 결단해야 하는 때는 '지금’이지, 다음번이 아닙니다.

■ ‘일시적 단물인가, 영원한 생명인가’ (이재철)
톨스토이는 그리스도인으로 많은 사람에게 영향을 끼친 위대한 작가입니다. 그가 쓴 ‘참회록’에 실린 우화에는 인간의 모습을 이렇게 묘사합니다. 어떤 사람이 맹수를 피하려고 우물 속으로 뛰어 들어가 넝쿨에 매달렸습니다. 그런데 우물 밑바닥에는 독사가 입을 벌리고 그 사람이 떨어지기를 기다립니다. 우물 위에서는 맹수가 그를 잡아먹으려고 기다리는데, 엎친 데 덮친 격으로 그가 붙잡은 넝쿨 윗부분을 생쥐 두 마리가 갉아먹습니다. 넝쿨은 자꾸 약해지는데, 이런 급박한 상황에서 그는 자기가 붙잡은 넝쿨 줄기에서 떨어지는 벌꿀을 빨아 먹고 있었습니다. 꿀의 단맛 때문에 밑에 독사가 있다는 것, 위에 맹수가 있다는 것, 넝쿨이 끊어지고 있다는 것을 새하얗게 잊어버린 것입니다. 만약 그 줄에 매달린 사람이 하나님께 기도했다면 무엇을 간구했겠습니까? 단물이 더 나오게 해 달라고 하지 않았을까요? 바로 이런 어리석은 모습이 다름 아닌 우리 모습입니다. 구원자로서의 예수 그리스도를 만나지 못하면 내 욕심, 내 소원, 내 뜻만 이루어지게 해 달라고 기도하게 됩니다. 세상에서 탐욕으로 이전투구를 벌이는 모습은 단물을 먹겠다고 싸우는 것과 같습니다. 그러나 누구든지 자기 모습을 정확하게 인식한다면, 하늘을 구원의 은혜를 베풀어 달라고 부르짖을 것입니다. 일시적으로 주어지는 단물이 영원한 안식과 생명에 결코 비할 바 못 된다는 사실을 깨닫게 되기 때문입니다.

■ 오늘의 기도
주님과 말씀만이 아니라, 돈과 세상 명예도 함께 바라는 '두 마음’이 우리 안에 있음을 봅니다. 오늘도 주님이 우리 삶의 전부이심을 진실로 고백하며, 주님 향한 순전한 마음을 회복하게 하소서. 아멘.

“Before the Governor”

■ [사도행전(Acts) 24:24-25:5]
(24:24) Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus. 25 As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.” 26 At the same time he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him. 27 When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, but because Felix wanted to grant a favor to the Jews, he left Paul in prison.
(25:1) Three days after arriving in the province, Festus went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem, 2 where the chief priests and the Jewish leaders appeared before him and presented the charges against Paul. 3 They requested Festus, as a favor to them, to have Paul transferred to Jerusalem, for they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way. 4 Festus answered, “Paul is being held at Caesarea, and I myself am going there soon. 5 Let some of your leaders come with me, and if the man has done anything wrong, they can press charges against him there.”

■ The Gospel Convicts (24'.24-27)
Felix is a corrupt governor who has been keeping Paul in jail as a favor to his Jewish constituents and only speaks to him whenever it is convenient. When he does talk to Paul, he hopes that Paul will offer him a bribe, even though bribes are against Roman law. It is not surprising, therefore, that Felix is uncomfortable and afraid when Paul shares about righteousness, self-control, and judgment. When we hear about the righteousness and judgment of God, we might feel conviction of sin and become painfully aware of how unrighteous we really are. However, our response does not need to be fear, worry, or self-disgust. We can repent and turn away from our sins and towards Christ so that we may walk in His ways.

■ God's Plan Prevails (25:1-5)
Paul has already been in jail for two years when Festus becomes the new governor after Felix. Festus travels to Jerusalem and meets some of the Jewish leaders there. They ask for Paul to be sent back to Jerusalem because they are secretly planning to ambush and kill him as he travels. Instead of granting their request, Festus tells the Jewish leaders that they can go back with him to Caesarea and press charges there. We can see that God's plan for Paul is more definitive than the plan of the Jewish leaders who intend to harm him. Even through non-Christian government leaders, God can work to protect His people and fulfill His plans.

■ Prayer
God, thank you for Your righteousness and judgment. Help me to abhor what is evil and cling to what is good so that I may reflect the righteousness of Christ. In Jesus' name. Amen.
