이 책은 로렌스 형제가 하나님의 마음을 알아 가면서 깨달은 영적 통찰들을 모은 것이다. 여기엔 그의 편지도 있고, 그와 가까운 친구였던 조셉 (Joseph de Beaufort)이 회고한 그와의 대화도 있으며, 그가 남긴 말들과 그의 생애에 대한 약술도 들어 있다.  3백 년이나 전에 쓰여진 글들이지만, 바쁜 세상에 얽매여 살아가고 있는 오늘날의 모든 그리스도인에게 경종을 울려 주는 메시지가 될 것이다.

로렌스 형제 자신이 쓴 것이든 친구 조셉이 쓴 것이든 그 하나하나 마다에는 로렌스 형제의 심령 깊숙한 곳에 들어 있던 비밀들이 아주 잘 드러난다. 그의 영혼 속에는 그리스도인의 생활에서 가장 핵심 요소라 할 만한, 늘 하나님의 임재 속에 거하는 법이 터득되어 자리하고 있었다.

이 책은 아주 짤막한 책이다. 우리 편집진들은 이미 그리스도인의 고전이 되어 버린 이 책을 펴냄에 있어서 원본의 언어들을 가능한 한 현대적이고 명료하게 표현하고자 했다. 그러다 보니 필요한 경우 본래의 메세지에는 손을 대지 않은 채 몇몇 단어들을 바꿨 쓰기도 했음을 밝혀둔다.

하나님의 임재속에 온전히 거하고자 평생을 경주했던 로렌스 형제, 그를 만남으로써 여러분도 계속하여 그런 삶을 추구하리라 믿는다.

The Practice of the Presence of God is a collection of Brother Lawrence's spiritual insights into the heart of God, as revealed through his letters, conversations, and his life itself. Written over three hundred years ago, this message is relevant for every Christian who is caught up in the rush of today's world.

Each section, whether written by the author's own hand or by his close friend, Joseph de Beaufort, reveals the inner secrets of Brother Lawrence's heart—a heart that had learned the most essential ingredient of the Christian life: how to remain in the presence of God.

In this abridged edition, we have sought to update and clarify the language of this Christian classic, paraphrasing where necessary, while keeping the essence of the message intact.

We trust that Brother Lawrence's lifelong endeavor to dwell completely in the presence of God will become a continual practice for all who read this book.

1.대화(Conversation)

로렌스 형제가 터득한바 하나님과 대화하기 위한 가장 효과적인 방법은 단순히 자신의 평범한 일상사를 수행하는 것이다. 그는 맡겨진 일과를 하나님을 향한 순수한 사랑에서 우러나오는 순종의 마음으로 감당했다. 그리고 자신의 그 사랑이, 인간이 할 수 있는 한 가장 순결한 것이 되고자 늘 애썼다.

The most effective way to communicate with God, as Brother Lawrence has learned, is simply to practice his ordinary everyday life. He sustained the work he committed with the obedience of pure obedience to God, and his love always tried to be the purest of all human beings.
