“세상이 막을 수 없는 복음의 능력”

■ [사도행전(Acts) 24:1-9]
(행 24:1) 닷새 후에 대제사장 아나니아가 어떤 장로들과 한 변호사 더둘로와 함께 내려와서 총독 앞에서 바울을 고발하니라
(행 24:2) 바울을 부르매 더둘로가 고발하여 이르되
(행 24:3) 벨릭스 각하여 우리가 당신을 힘입어 태평을 누리고 또 이 민족이 당신의 선견으로 말미암아 여러 가지로 개선된 것을 우리가 어느 모양으로나 어느 곳에서나 크게 감사하나이다
(행 24:4) 당신을 더 괴롭게 아니하려 하여 우리가 대강 여짜옵나니 관용하여 들으시기를 원하나이다
(행 24:5) 우리가 보니 이 사람은 전염병 같은 자라 천하에 흩어진 유대인을 다 소요하게 하는 자요 나사렛 이단의 우두머리라
(행 24:6) 그가 또 성전을 더럽게 하려 하므로 우리가 잡았사오니. (6하반~8상반 없음)
(행 24:8) 당신이 친히 그를 심문하시면 우리가 고발하는 이 모든 일을 아실 수 있나이다 하니
(행 24:9) 유대인들도 이에 참가하여 이 말이 옳다 주장하니라

■ 아첨하는 변호사 더둘로 (24:1~4)
거짓말하는 자는 자기가 해한 자를 미워하고, 아첨하는 입은 패망을 일으킵니다(잠 26:28). 유대 지도자들이 고용한 변호사 더둘로는 바울을 고발하기 전에 먼저, 총독 덕분에 자신들이 태평을 누린다며 아첨합니다. 사실 벨리스 총독은 유대인들을 혹독하게 대한 포악한 지도자입니다. 그런데도 더둘로가 마치 총독이 선한 통치를 베푼 양 치켜세운 것은 총독의 마음을 녹여 자기들 편으로 만듦으로써 바울을 죽이고가 함입니다. 즉, 자신들이 원하는 재판 결과를 얻기 위함입니다. 성도는 세상 권력 앞에 비굴하게 거짓으로 아부하며 자신이 원하는 것을 얻어 내려 해서는 안 됩니다. 하나님의 통치를 받는 백성으로서, 하나님이 베풀어 주시는 은혜로 살아간다는 믿음의 고백을 하며 정직과 정의의 편에 서야 합니다.

■ 모함받는 바울 (24:5~9)
악한 세력은 어떻게든 복음이 퍼져 나가는 것을 막으려 합니다. 더둘로는 바울이 사회에 위협적인 존재임을 부각하려고, 자극적인 표현을 써서 바울을 고발합니다. 복음은 '전염병’처럼 전염성이 강하고, 영향력이 매우 큽니다. 그러나 복음은 사람을 죽이는 것이 아니라, 진정으로 살리는 것임을 더둘로는 알지 못했습니다. 바울은 '이단의 우두머리’가 아니라, 참된 구원의 길이신 예수 그리스도를 전하는 하나님의 종입니다. 더둘로는 고소인들이 바울을 죽이고자 하는 결정적인 이유, 곧 '성전 모독’에 해당하는 거짓 죄목을 마지막에 언급합니다. 이처럼 세상이 아무리 복음 전파자를 모함하며 없애려 해도 부음의 생명력은 결코 막을 수 없습니다.

■ 오늘의 기도
자기 목적을 달성하려고 아첨과 모함을 일삼는 세상에서 진실을 왜곡하지 않는 사람이 되게 하소서. 어떤 모욕이나 어려움을 당할지라도 복음 전파의 선봉에 섰던 바울처럼, 어디서든 예수 그리스도의 생명의 복음을 퍼뜨리는 영향력 있는 그리스도인이 되게 하소서. 아멘.

“Falsely Accused”

■ [사도행전(Acts) 24:1-9]
1 Five days later the high priest Ananias went down to Caesarea with some of the elders and a lawyer named Tertullus, and they brought their charges against Paul before the governor. 2 When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented his case before Felix: “We have enjoyed a long period of peace under you, and your foresight has brought about reforms in this nation. 3 Everywhere and in every way, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude. 4 But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly. 5 “We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect 6-7 and even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him.By 8 examining him yourself you will be able to learn the truth about all these charges we are bringing against him.” 9 The other Jews joined in the accusation, asserting that these things were true.

■ Fighting Against God (24:1—4)
Paul and the Gospel message he preaches is a threat to the status quo. The Jewish religious leaders have worked very hard to maintain their influence over the region, and they are unwilling to let one man jeopardize it. When their plan to murder Paul in Jerusalem is foiled, Ananias the high priest, Tertullus the lawyer, and some of the elders travel sixty miles (approximately 100 km) to Caesarea to speak with Felix, the governor of Judea. They seem to think that they can get rid of Paul like they did Jesus, by bringing false accusations against him. Tertullus begins by flattering Felix, telling him how excellent he is. Little does he know that their fight is against God Himself. Not even the best crafted argument can win against God.

■ The Truth (24:5-9)
After showering Felix with words of flattery, Tertullus presents a list of false charges against Paul. He accuses Paul of being a troublemaker, inciting riots, leading an unrecognized religious cult, and attempting to desecrate the temple. Tertullus states that Felix will also come to the same conclusion if he questions Paul, and the other Jews join in to assert that their accusations against Paul are true. It is ironic that these Jewish leaders are calling their lies the truth. The situation seems bleak for Paul, as everyone in the courtroom is against him, But God is with Paul, and His truth will prevail. Nothing can stop the spread of the Gospel of truth.

■ Prayer
Lord, sometimes the accusations of others are tough to bear, especially when they are not true. Help me to stand firm in Your truth no matter what. When l am being disciplined, may I be humble so that I may look more like Christ In Jesus' name. Amen.
