“복음을 위해 하나님과 사람에 대하여 항상 양심에 거리낌이 없는 삶이 필요한 그리스도인”

■ [사도행전(Acts) 24:10-23]
(행 24:10) ○총독이 바울에게 머리로 표시하여 말하라 하니 그가 대답하되 당신이 여러 해 전부터 이 민족의 재판장 된 것을 내가 알고 내 사건에 대하여 기꺼이 변명하나이다
(행 24:11) 당신이 아실 수 있는 바와 같이 내가 예루살렘에 예배하러 올라간 지 열이틀밖에 안 되었고
(행 24:12) 그들은 내가 성전에서 누구와 변론하는 것이나 회당 또는 시중에서 무리를 소동하게 하는 것을 보지 못하였으니
(행 24:13) 이제 나를 고발하는 모든 일에 대하여 그들이 능히 당신 앞에 내세울 것이 없나이다
(행 24:14) 그러나 이것을 당신께 고백하리이다 나는 그들이 이단이라 하는 도를 따라 조상의 하나님을 섬기고 율법과 선지자들의 글에 기록된 것을 다 믿으며
(행 24:15) 그들이 기다리는 바 하나님께 향한 소망을 나도 가졌으니 곧 의인과 악인의 부활이 있으리라 함이니이다
(행 24:16) 이것으로 말미암아 나도 하나님과 사람에 대하여 항상 양심에 거리낌이 없기를 힘쓰나이다
(행 24:17) 여러 해 만에 내가 내 민족을 구제할 것과 제물을 가지고 와서
(행 24:18) 드리는 중에 내가 결례를 행하였고 모임도 없고 소동도 없이 성전에 있는 것을 그들이 보았나이다 그러나 아시아로부터 온 어떤 유대인들이 있었으니
(행 24:19) 그들이 만일 나를 반대할 사건이 있으면 마땅히 당신 앞에 와서 고발하였을 것이요
(행 24:20) 그렇지 않으면 이 사람들이 내가 공회 앞에 섰을 때에 무슨 옳지 않은 것을 보았는가 말하라 하소서
(행 24:21) 오직 내가 그들 가운데 서서 외치기를 내가 죽은 자의 부활에 대하여 오늘 너희 앞에 심문을 받는다고 한 이 한 소리만 있을 따름이니이다 하니
(행 24:22) 벨릭스가 이 도에 관한 것을 더 자세히 아는 고로 연기하여 이르되 천부장 루시아가 내려오거든 너희 일을 처결하리라 하고
(행 24:23) 백부장에게 명하여 바울을 지키되 자유를 주고 그의 친구들이 그를 돌보아 주는 것을 금하지 말라 하니라

■ 바울의 변론 (24:10~16)
그리스도인은 성경을 진리로 받아들이며, 구약에 예언된 메시아가 예수님임을 믿고, 그분으로 말미암아 부활 소망을 지닌 사람입니다. 바울은 자신의 무죄를 논리적으로 입증한 후 신앙을 고백하면서, 자기변호의 기회를 복음 전파의 기회로 삼습니다. 이때 바울은 “당신이 아실 수 있는 바와 같이”(11절)라고 밀하며 총독과의 공감대를 형성합니다. 또한 “그들이 기다리는•••소망을 나도 가졌으니”(15절)라는 말로 유대인들과도 공감대를 형성합니다. 이처럼 상대방의 공감을 끌어내며 논리적인 설득과 신앙 고백을 이어 가는 것은, 오해받거나 적대적인 환경에서 복음을 전할 때 효과적인 방법입니다. 무엇보다도 하나님과 사람에 대해 양심에 거리낌 없도록 힘쓸 때, 우리가 선포하는 복음은 힘 있게 전해질 것입니다.

■ 진실과 함께 전해진 복음의 핵심 (24:17~23)
진실한 입술은 영원히 보존되지만, 거짓 혀는 잠시 동안만 있을 뿐입니다(잠 12:19). 법정에서 더둘로는 거짓을 말한 반면 바울은 진실만 말합니다. 바울이 예루살렘에 온 것은 제물을 드리고, 유대인들의 어려움을 돕기 위해 마련된 구제 헌금을 전하기 위함이었습니다. 그는 자신에 대한 유대인들의 오해를 풀기 위해 율법 규정에 따라 정결 예식도 행했습니다. 바울은 자신이 심문받는 것은 '부활을 말하기 때문이라며, 복음의 핵심을 다시금 전합니다. 유대인들의 종교를 잘 아는 총독은 바울의 무죄를 인식하고도 최종 판결을 미룹니다. 하지만 그의 호의는 바울에 대한 인식이 나쁘지 않았음을 보여 줍니다. 성도는 늘 진실하고 신실한 삶을 추구해야 합니다.

■ 오늘의 기도
부활하셔서 지금도 저를 지켜보고 계시는 주님 앞에서 부끄러움 없이 살고자 할 때, 사람들 앞에서도 당당할 수 있음을 깨닫습니다. 성령과 말씀을 좇아 깨끗한 양심을 지니고 영적으로 늘 깨어 있어, 주님이 마련해 주신 복음을 전하며 영혼 구원의 기회를 놓치지 않게 하소서. 아멘.

“Paul’s Defence”

■ [사도행전(Acts) 24:10-23]
10 When the governor motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: “I know that for a number of years you have been a judge over this nation; so I gladly make my defense. 11 You can easily verify that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship. 12 My accusers did not find me arguing with anyone at the temple, or stirring up a crowd in the synagogues or anywhere else in the city. 13 And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me. 14 However, I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets, 15 and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. 16 So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man. 17 “After an absence of several years, I came to Jerusalem to bring my people gifts for the poor and to present offerings. 18 I was ceremonially clean when they found me in the temple courts doing this. There was no crowd with me, nor was I involved in any disturbance. 19 But there are some Jews from the province of Asia, who ought to be here before you and bring charges if they have anything against me. 20 Or these who are here should state what crime they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin— 21 unless it was this one thing I shouted as I stood in their presence: ‘It is concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.’ ” 22 Then Felix, who was well acquainted with the Way, adjourned the proceedings. “When Lysias the commander comes,” he said, “I will decide your case.” 23 He ordered the centurion to keep Paul under guard but to give him some freedom and permit his friends to take care of his needs.

■ Above Reproach (24:10-16)
Here we see Paul respond to the false accusations that have been brought against him. He does not become overly emotional or respond with vengeance against his accusers. He simply gives a logical, step-by-step account of his coming to Jerusalem to worship God. There were no riots during this time, nor were there any witnesses who saw Paul stirring up chaos. Felix can easily verify these facts, as Paul explains. Paul has done nothing wrong. In fact, he has made every effort to keep his conscience clear before God and man. Through this passage, we see a godly example of how to conduct ourselves when we are unfairly accused of wrongdoing. May we also conduct ourselves in a way that is above reproach, that our conscience may be clear before God and man.

■ Wrongfully Accused (24:17-23)
In verse 17, Paul mentions that he came to Jerusalem to bring gifts for the poor. He has not broken any Jewish laws, and he made sure that he was ceremonially clean in the temple. He simply came to bless the poor in the Jerusalem church, but he is now being accused of causing a disturbance. Paul explains that the real reason he is being accused is because of his belief in the resurrection of Jesus. After hearing both sides, Felix decides to delay his judgment until Lysias the commander arrivese Though Paul remains under guard, he is allowed visits from his friends. Even amidst these difficulties, we see that God is taking care of him. Like Paul, we may experience hardship as we do God's work, but we can be encouraged, knowing that God will be with us and take care of us.

■ Prayer
Lord, please help me to keep my conscience clear before You and man. Search my heart and reveal anything I need to remove from my life. Please protect me from the attacks of those who are against me. In Jesus' name. Amen.
